Joe felt he needed to initiate the kids into a long-standing Palmer Halloween tradition - pumpkin-smashing. The kids were all too eager to participate and squealed with delight as their rotting pumpkins splatted all over the pavement. Then they made me get in the car and run over the fragments so that they were really smashed. They were hysterically laughing. As good citizens, though, we made them clean up the guts. Actually, I made them clean it all up - Joe was all for them naturally biodegrading in the street (part of the tradition...).
